A Synchromystic journey documenting the dreams, synchronicities, symbols, and archetypes that resonate and reverberate around my Psyche/Consciousness
I have worn a small pa qua around my neck since the age of about 23 . I received it as a gift from my Tai Chi / Kung Fu teacher. He had just returned from a trip to see his Buddhist Master. He distributed various Buddhist medallions to some of his closest students but to me and Black Steve he gave Daoist Pa Qua's
I wore it day and night for years because it felt special. I had always liked the yin yang symbol since seeing it on a "Town and Country" surfboard as a child in Hayle, Cornwall.
In mid nine my friends Ed Synister (Dead Dog Mountain) & Jonny Jedi (Fused/3EV) designed a flyer and backdrop for a birthday party I was having based around a yin yang and a (smurf)
I knew the Pa Qua was a yin yang surrounded by the eight directions /trigrams of the I Ching and that Pa Qua mirrors were used in Feng Shui . I was also vaguely aware of the internal art with similarities to Tai Chi commonly referred to as "Ba Gua Zhang."
I once had a Korean girlfriend named "Joh" who seemed impressed I wore a pa qua, she said in Korea only really "old school" people wear them.
As my martial arts journey progressed I took up the Brazillian art of Capoeira and after a few years met my teachers Master "Mestre No". I was surprised when I first met him to see he wore a large Pa Qua round his neck. I was even more surprised when the first thing he did was walk up to me point his finger at my Pa Qua and said "Why are you wearing that? Do you know what it means?"

Guy Garvey (Lead singer of Elbow)
Back when I was 23 I had an experience that would significantly alter the course of my life. I had visited my family for the weekend. On the friday night I had a memorable dream that I was on a hospital trolley being wheeled into theatre for an operation.
The next day I went out for drinks with my brother and his friends. As we were leaving the pub (a little worse for wear) I fell over a low chain in the car park, causing some laughter. We went back to my brothers flat for few more drinks, but I had knocked my elbow in the fall which was hurting. After a while my brother said "Your not really the mood anymore why don't you call it a night and go home." So I left and walked to parents house where I was staying.
The next morning when I went downstairs my mum said "You look dreadful" I explained I had fallen and hurt my elbow. When I showed it to her, it had swollen up, so she suggested we go to hospital to have it checked out. It turned out to be a significant break requiring an operation and some metal implanted. I was admitted and that evening I found my self on a hospital trolley being wheeled into theatre just as in my dream.
I have since read that sometimes a "Shamanic Awakening" can be precipitated by dream and/or physical trauma.
Following the operation had to to spend a week at my parents to recover. As I returned to London I was thinking "I need to turn my life around, clean up my act, get a decent job , do some exercise, etc " As I had this thought I saw a poster for a "Tai Chi Kung Fu" class with the strap line "Learn to focus you mind, body and spirit as one force" as soon as my arm was better I enrolled and the rest is history.

When I first started training martial arts aged 23 I joined a school named "Yellow Dragon Fist" the Sifu Simon Wong, was a Master of "Bamboo Forest Temple Mantis" (a Southern Mantis hard style of Kung Fu) and Yang style Tai Chi Chuan (an internal/soft style) , He was also a member of the True Buddha School a Buddhist sect that combined Tantric (Tibetan Buddhism) with elements of Taoism.
Mantis Kung Fu in general mirrors the strong stance and powerful forearms of the preying mantis. Bamboo Forrest Temple Mantis is the least well known and practised of the mantis styles.
It is commonly known that the female preying Mantis is the more deadly of the species, being larger than the male and occasionally practising sexual canabalism after mating.
The Mantis is a bug eyed creature and in recent years has been likened on more than one occasion to common portrayls of those "alien" visitors to earth of the kind described in Whitley Steibers "Communion."
