Valente/Valiant means worthy, courageous, strong

St. Valentine was a  Roman Bishop and martyr that supposedly helped persecuted Christians wed.

In the middle ages people believed birds paired in February

The original Christian holiday was established in 496 probably as part of the Christianising of the previous  pagan Festival "Lupercalia" Some of the ritualistic manifestations of these  festivals have survived to this day in the carnival traditions.
