DJ'S and MC's

For a number of years it has been common to use the term "rapper"  for those that  spit rhymes (rap). For many in Old School Hip Hop culture the term "MC" is prefered, (the four pillars of hip hop being DJ'ing,  MC'ing , B'Boying (breaking) and Writing (graffiti).

There is still some debate over whether M.C. means "Mike Controller" or "Master of Ceremonies" (perhaps it can be both).

Interestingly in Jamaican soundsystem culture where Hip Hop has a least some of it roots.  In the early days, the person "toasting" over the records  was often referred to as the "Deejay" and the "Disc Jockey" was known as the "Selector".
